A playground that references the city’s history as a mining town

The City of Dortmund advertised for bids to redesign a playground at Wenemarstrasse.
The district representatives at Mengede were keen on taking up the town’s mining industry past. Children, parents and neighbours contributed many ideas and suggestions as part of the planning process.

Thus, an appealingly designed playground was constructed on a 1.470 square-metre-large plot that includes spatially separated sections for toddlers, school children as well as for youths.

A large climbing-play structure, the “Malakow Tower” (a pit-head frame), offers an exciting and unusual combination of play involving motion elements and recreational spaces as well as a large tube slide.
A sand-play and balancing construction was designed separately for the little ones. Elements relating to the mining theme encompass a trolley transporter (whose design was incorporated into a climbing structure) and a playhouse. Diverse balancing opportunities and a double swing are also on hand.
At the opening ceremony, Mayor Ullrich Sierau noted that “kids can have a great time playing and engaging in physical activity here “at the little pit mine”.
