Appelhoff (Apple yard)

Owing to the singularity of the grounds and customizing requirements for the play equipment, the planning office recommended that the municipal office award the commission directly. Ensuing discussions and the provision of suitable ideas persuaded the contractor to accept this recommendation by the planning office. Thus, play equipment dealing with the \"apple yard\" theme was developed. On the one hand, it could be described as being \"modern.\" On the other hand, it was also \"historical\". Variations on themes centered on farming tools, fruit trees, apple orchards were discussed as was a large silo with a conveyer belt to serve as a climbing stretch.
The drawings and designs were presented; implementation of the play equipment was conducted with the incorporation of great detail and embracing a playful style. Typical equipment and structures, as well as figures, invigorate the apple yard theme: a large silo with a conveyer belt, a tractor, an apple press, a horse-drawn cart, a farm dog, a “dancing” farm girl, a barn and lots of apple crates. What results is a dense and varied play landscape applied to a localized theme. The city of Hamburg (Wandsbek) took part in the Spielraumpreis 2009 (Playground Prize 2009) using this playground as its entry contribution and reached one of the top spots. The award ceremony took place during FSB 2009 in Cologne.
