As requested by the architects, a water theme was to be materialized for the play area located near the Spree River. Because this playground is spread out along such an extensive area, we suggested the creation of an island playground similar to our Mikado playground, except that here the sticks would represent “driftwood.” Pile dwellings for the “wet or swampy areas” would also be built. The design was based on the principle that all island play elements be reachable without having to make contact with the “wet” ground. It would be possible to reach all the play areas (islands) across the “driftwood.”
Related to the water theme, there is also the so-called “frog area” constructed out of wobbly discs or springers with carved frog figures, a reed bench and small fish-shaped springers.
The large pile dwelling hut has a wrap-around balcony and is climbable using different variations of up and down stairways. The woods used are very distinct with cross sections carved out of octagonal beams. This provides a balancing, upward facing surface with two colorfully painted sides. Even for experienced climbers, it is a difficult task to get from one end to the other.
