A new residential concept for Mainz was realized to go hand in hand with the “Gonsbach Terraces”.
Modeled after ideas conceived by Geskes & Hack, and with the city’s most famous citizen, Johannes Gutenburg (inventor of movable type printing press) in mind, Zimmer.Obst designed a “Book Stack” play tower, that is climbable from within and features a large tubular slide.
Accessibility to the tower is facilitated via crawl entries with various large openings. The way to the top and slide entrance leads over interdependent levels, whereby lateral surfaces of the abstract books, which feature powder-coated lattices, ensure a sweeping view over the playground and beyond. A special, customized balancing course called “Letter Confusion” and made of various big “letters”, all lopsided and askew, is located on the meadow near the book tower.
