Lübeck’s Marien School playground refurbished

Designing playground equipment for an elementary school entails playing close attention to the fact that it will be subjected to strong stresses. On average, this equipment is used twice daily - over a short duration - by up to 150 children. This put a premium on stability and durability but also on diverse play and action / agility opportunities.
During the Summer of 2012, such a playground was completed at Lübeck’s Marien School. Plans called for a new outside playground for the elementary school’s courtyard. Owing to the limited space that the school grounds offer, our construction, which includes a large slide tower, a large tree landing for sitting , a drawing board, numerous balancing and sitting blocks, a balancing path, climbing nets, horizontal bars, sliding pole and balance springer discs, was mounted among the on-site trees. In the summertime, these trees also provide cooling shade for the playing children.
Another section of the Marien School playground that we newly created is a large stage for theatre performances during school festivities. With a minimum of effort, this stage can also be used for an al fresco classroom.
Since October 2012, the school children have been able to take charge of their new playground.
