“Off to new shores!” is the motto for the State Garden Show 2014 in Giessen.

A spacious play area, encompassing 900-square-meters and sloping down to the river via four terraces, was developed south of the Sachsenhäuser Bridge.
The playground not only lies within the floodplain; its unique design emulates the various littoral zones of the Lahn River.
Each of the four terraces was designed with a particular theme in mind. In this way individualized play equipment is offered variously on sand, gravel, meadow and lawn terraces.

In keeping with the themes “Driftwood” and “Stranded Boots and Tree Trunks”, a climbing frame, see-saw, slide and benches were installed on the upper platform and offer shelter to play on and hide in.
In the shore vegetation zone, the insect world was portrayed abstractly by means of small platform springer shaped like a butterfly.
On the sand and mud terrace, the smallest children can experiment with water and sand and design small river courses for themselves.

The “Riverside” theme was taken up in a child-suitable way and implemented using an abstract play equipment design with a uniform design language, coordinated coloring (glazes) and choice materials.

The new playground creates a passageway from the lower-lying Lahn River shore to Giessen’s town center; it has evolved into a new meeting point for families with children throughout the entire city.
