“Fit for the Future”

STADT UND LAND Wohnbauten- Gesellschaft mbH, located in Berlin-Hellersdorf, is one of the biggest housing associations in Berlin.
The residential areas supervised by it are characterized by the prefabricated high-rise buildings from the 1980s.
These multistory buildings were laid out in blocks of flats and thus allow for the development of spacious green courtyards.
A re-planning and restoration of the grounds is meant to upgrade this residential area for families and generally make it more attractive. Above all, new playgrounds in the courtyards are to be made “fit for the future” in the coming years.

Four play areas in Berlin-Hellersdorf have already been renewed.
In close cooperation with the builder, Lechner Landschaftsarchitekten, and Zimmer.Obst, the idea arose to develop overlapping play equipment modules that can be matched to the specific conditions on hand at the respective courtyards.
Colored steel pipes serve as the base structure and appear throughout in every yard. In connection with wooden beams, platforms, ropes, nets and various other add-on components, new play situations and levels of difficulty for every age group are created again and again.

COURT 1 (Waldheimer Strasse/Döbelner Strasse/Leisniger Strasse)
Climbing, balancing, hand-over-hand, sliding and swinging.
A climbing course made of colorful steel pipes and oak beams on a play hill with a long stainless steel slide, a suspension bridge, climbing nets and various other balancing and climbing possibilities.

COURT 2 (Suhler Strasse/Alte Hellersdorfer Strasse)
Balancing, hand-over-hand and swinging.
A play system made of mono-colored yellow steel pipes connected with oak beams and platforms, a horizontal bar, as well as a balancing rope and a sitting hammock.

COURT 3 (Gothaer Strasse/Eisenacher Strasse)
Swinging and balancing.
The smallest courtyard got a braided swing on which there is room for 3-4 children simultaneously.
Balancing beams were not part of the offering. Here, too, steel supports in bright yellow were used.

COURT 4 (Riesaer Strasse/Döbelner Strsse)
Climbing, sliding, hand-over-hand and swinging.
The play system in this yard merges sport with play for social interaction.
A playground made of steel pipes with wooden umbels that are reminiscent of a grassland.
Equipped with play elements like hanging passageways, slides, safety seat swings and various other climbing possibilities.
Especially due to the complimentary loungers, benches and exercise equipment, the area becomes a meeting place for all generations. The color tint that all the equipment has in common brings the playground together as an ensemble and gives the courtyard an image.
