Playground at the Park am Buschkrug

The overriding theme for the “Playground of the Nations” is peaceful coexistence among European nations and their diverse cultures.
This is the first time an opportunity presented itself in Germany – or even in Europe – to implement this interesting theme using individual play areas in a large areal in Berlin-Neukölln.

With its roughly 79.000 square meters, the Park am Buschkrug in Berlin-Neukölln is Germany’s largest continuous so-called “motor skills parks”. Along with a fitness course, several playgrounds were to be developed beginning in 2014. Of the five play stations that were tendered in a competition, Zimmer.Obst was awarded two. These were to cover the themes of “Scandinavia” and “the Balkans”.

The “Dracula´s Castle“ and “Europe Camp“ playgrounds were conceived for young researchers and discoverers.

“The Prince of Darkness”
The stories about him still abound in Eastern Europe. Young “scientists” from throughout Europe descend upon the Euro-Camp at the gates of his castle to investigate these stories.

The “Dracula’s Castle” play area consists of a large climbing tower with many asymmetrical climbing possibilities. The overall tower structure looks like a collection of randomly constructed wooden elements. Little niches and hollows between the wooden facades give access to the tower’s interior. The colors and the special lighting effects enhance the interior’s mysterious atmosphere. The ascent can be done over several levels and climbing elements including nets and climbing walls. The spire, which represents a dragon’s head (diameter approx. 200 cm), is accessible from within; it is made of polyester.

The giant dragon head juts out of the fortress and gazes out upon the extensive park grounds. The basic form of the head was prefabricated using Styrofoam and plaster to later be cladded with fiberglass pads and laminated. The head’s interior is a space suffused with light and the play of color. This gives it an impressive, slightly lurid effect.
The play area for the older children is characterized by various possibilities for physical activity and exciting challenges that are especially stimulating for children of this age group.
