Red Cross Playground

By means of a little competition, the city of Antwerp hoped to collect some ideas for a toddlers’ playground located at Rodekruislaan.
To this end, we supported Krambamboul project management by delivering theme-based designs.
These were met with approval in Antwerp and Krambamboul was commissioned with the implementation – though with a few small changes.
For various reasons, an abstract depiction of syringes in the design was not approved and thus, “these were replaced with fever thermometers and artistic- ally conceived pill boxes”.
The Red Cross theme is treated in a playful manner and the children won’t have to fear hospitals or ambulances.
There is a climbing frame entitled “messed up beds” and a “nurse” roundabout that is made with a great love of detail. There is also an ambulance and a “Fever Tower.”
Benches for sprawling are meant for older children and adopt the basic shape of a “Red Cross” whereby the individual surfaces “fold back” into various directions. Conventional sitting is thus not intended and one is encouraged to sprawl.
Because of their execution size, the objects are clearly conceived for use by 3 - 8 year-olds. Perhaps a child’s career aspiration will be take hold here?
