Stranded in Prenzlauer Berg on Play Ship “Marie”

A mid-sized play ship has always been the main attraction at the Marienburger Strasse Playground. It was even integrated in the logo of the local citizens’ initiative group. But due to aging and intensive use, as well as the wear that goes hand in hand with this, the play ship had become dilapidated. It needed to be disassembled as a preventative safety measure. Knowing how popular the ship was with children, the local initiative made it clear that a new mid-sized play ship needed to be built as a replacement. This initiative group began a fundraising campaign informed by the slogan “Shipwreck – Off to new shores.” This campaign was a great success. Local residents, the community, the district, Zimmer.Obst GmbH and many, many others participated and managed to get together the necessary funds to construct a new ship in 2014.
The new play ship “Marie” now once again invites children to take part in role playing, burrowing in the sand, sliding, climbing and playing hide-and-seek. Built at the same location and adapted to the existing environment, the new play ship fits in wonderfully with the many play areas already in place.
