A Playground for “Small Fries”

The John-Locke-Strasse Playground in Berlin-Lichtenrade was redesigned in connection with a daycare center and playground restoration program.
The new “Small Fries” (or “Young Vegetables” in German) playground was divided into two play areas.

The large play area for the older children beckons with an exciting program of varied climbing and balancing possibilities (tree platforms, spider nets and spiders, low ropes course), a jungle gym with slide and a bird’s nest swing.
The play equipment has been appropriately designed to match the topic. Discreet references to “young vegetables” can be discovered everywhere. You can balance on “radishes” or swing on long stalks from ears of corn.
The children encounter artistically designed carrots, asparagus and pumpkins on their climbing courses.

A gnome figure welcomes the younger children in the southern part of the unit. Here is where the “Garden Gnome” toddler play area is located.
A gnome house, an apple springer, a carrot see-saw and an amusing giant caterpillar - climbable either inside or outside – are located on a large patch of grass.
Not least is the old water playground that was also redesigned during the course of the reconstruction work and permits kids to cool down on hot days.

During the festive inauguration ceremony, district counselor Daniel Krüger suggested: “Fortunately, the task of creating the widest possible range of play opportunities for toddlers and children over six, as well as giving the existing water playground a more attractive design, was successfully carried out”.
